I. Core Cirriculum: Standard 5: Students will understand the properties and applications of waves. Objective 1: Demonstrate an understanding of mechanical waves in terms of general wave properties.
  • Differentiate between period, frequency, wavelength, and amplitude of waves.
  • Provide examples of waves commonly observed in nature and/or used in technological applications.
  • Identify the relationship between the speed, wavelength, and frequency of a wave.
  • Explain the observed change in frequency of a mechanical wave coming from a moving object as it approaches and moves away.
  • Explain the transfer of energy through a medium by mechanical waves.

    II. Engagement:
"Play the video below. Listen closely to the sound of the fire engine. Pretend you are the "observer." Write a paragaph describing what you hear as the fire truck gets closer and closer and what you hear as it travels farther and farther away. In a second paragraph give a logical explanation why there is a difference in the siren's pitch. Watch, listen and discuss the video with your team members. Listen to the video as many times as you need."
    Video 1: Fire Engine

    III. Exploration:
Visit the websites listed below and others that you may find. Document your investigation with notes keeping record of your resources and ideas and any other websites that were important in exploring the Doppler Effect. Be sure to note how speed, wave length, and freqeuncy of the wave are related to one another as you expore the two applets below. In the video write down the equation and identify what each symbols represents.

    Video 2: Doppler Train Ride

    IV. Explanation:
Make a short Power Point explaining the underlying principles that cause the Doppler Effect and the relationship between Speed, Wavelength, and Frequency of a sound wave.

    V. Extension:
  • What are some others ways the Doppler Effect is displayed in the world around us? List at least 2.
  • Design an original demonstration that is based upon information you have found, but uses different tools to demonstrate the Doppler Effect.
  • Doppler Shift and Expansion of the Universe

Video 3: Red and Blue Shift

  • Write a paragraph of 5 complete sentences explaining the similarities and differences between the phenomenon of Red & Blue Shift versus the mechanics of sound emitted by a moving object.
